Without a referee, there’s no game!

Referees are authorized to be in full control of players on and off the rink during match play, they ensure that players follow the rules of the game while maintaining a safe playing environment. It’s not an easy role; referees must handle pressure, possess an in-depth understanding of the game and its rules, make split-second decisions fairly and honestly and deal with confrontational players as well as coaches, which can be quite daunting and overwhelming.

However, it’s important to remember that this experience builds character. Facing adversity strengthens your integrity and boosts your confidence, equipping you to tackle challenges both on and off the rink.

Understanding the rules can enhance your skills as a player. Beyond the NIIHA Ref Clinics, held once or twice a year to train referees, becoming a great official requires time, experience, and learning from mistakes—much like becoming an exceptional player.

And let’s not forget, getting paid is an added bonus!
